EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
