The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
