Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
