TikTok Offers Users Power to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a global launch. This development coincides with a surge in content created by AI, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this output is classified as mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically absurd or surreal.

Our research shows that numerous viewers appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 m media items are added to the service every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small percentage of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be capable of limit or boost the level of artificial media they see by accessing the topic control setting in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be modified under the setting encompass news, clothing, beauty, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

Its rules mandate content makers to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous fake videos of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an artificially created label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is designed to help prevent users from seeking to bypass the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will assist charitable organizations focused on training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its safety measures, following discussion over plans to lay off a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content before it has to be seen by staff. The company announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
